Symbols

We use symbols every day in Drummore. They support the understanding of spoken language and provide a means of communication for our pupils. Using them at home can reduce your child's stress by helping them understand what you are asking them and allowing them to communicate their needs and wants to you.

On this page you will find some ideas for using symbols at home and a range of symbols you can use.

Every child develops communication at their own pace and we always want to support their individual progress. Staff are always happy to discuss your child's communication needs and share ideas and resources, just ask! 😊

Some Tips for Using Symbols at Home
  • The symbols you use don't need to be the same as school. You cab draw or even write your own, or use photographs. You don't need to have them printed out, you can just show the symbols on your phone and talk through it with your child.
  • Every class in Drummore uses a visual timetable to support our pupils to follow the events of the day. Some families find this helpful for routines at home, like bedtime or getting ready for school.

  • We use a "surprise" symbol on our timetables at school to show something in our normal routine is changing. You can use that too if you want to do something different from what you had planned.
  • If your child finds it hard to understand symbols you can use objects instead - we call these "objects of reference". You might use a toothbrush for a morning or bedtime routine, a plate to show its lunchtime, pens to show its time for writing or mark making. The possibilities are endless and you can choose what works best for you and your child. Once you have settled on the object, always show the same one!

Below you will find a range of symbols you can use with your child. You don't need to print them, you can just show them on your phone or computer. If you are looking for something specific that isn't here or you would like a set of symbols printed and sent home, contact you child's teachers through Seesaw.
