Makaton

Makaton signs help all learners to develop communication.  We use them every day in school.

For some children it is their preferred form of communication.  For others it supports their understanding of language and ability to convey their message.  Even if your child has fully developed language their best friend in class beside them might only use Makaton, so understanding their communication is really important!

Having a go at some signs at home will help our pupils to maintain these skills and will also allow families to understand the signs when they use them.

Some wee pointers to help you get started...

  • You might feel a little self conscious - that's normal.  The kids are used to seeing adults signing in school and the more you do it the more you get used to it.
  • Talk!  Always speak as you sign.  It's easy to forget this as you rack your brain for the sign so keep reminding yourself!
  • Don't worry about getting it wrong.  It's all practice.  Although the school staff are trained in Makaton we are often looking to each other to remember signs (or copying Naomi!).
  • If your child already knows or uses Makaton let them teach you.  It's a great chance for them to show what they know and build their confidence.
